For reasons unknown, we have had several members who are playing without paying.  If you haven't paid for a season pass, please pay the $15 per session fee.  It's just not fair to those who've paid...

bullet

Season Pass Information:

bullet

Season Passes for July to December will cost the same as before: $90 for Sundays and $70 for Thursdays, with a total of $130 for both.  The 'pay per play' stays at $15.

Make your checks payable to 'Over the Hill Basketball, Inc.' and give them to Rick Killigrew.  Or mail them to him at 11 Ames Drive, Sherborn, MA 01770.

The Board has heard comments from several members regarding players who bring their sons to play hoops. While no one has any objections, people have indicated that they don't feel it's right that OTH members should have to sit out to accommodate them. Others have indicated they don't enjoy playing with them as they often play the game at a different pace than most of the regular members. And still more have have mentioned that they're uncomfortable playing with them for fear of hurting them. In order to avoid any hard feelings, the Board is asking for your cooperation.
1. Members are welcome to bring their children to play for the regular $15 per session fee.
2. Sons/daughters must be at least 18 years old to play; both father and child MUST sign a regular OTH waiver before playing.
3. Fathers and sons will play in the same game. All father/son pairs will be in the same game also.
4. If there are an odd number of players--for example 25 total--two options exist. The son sits out until a third game can be organized or the son and father alternate substituting so the other players don't have to sit more than they would in a normal 12 person game.
5. Consider how crowded a given day may be, e.g. summers are usually a good time to bring someone. Early fall is not.

bullet

There have also been comments from members about those who arrive late (past 8:15 on Thursdays and 9:15 on Sundays). The issue is that those who arrive late 'screw up' existing games or series that have been in progress since it often requires creation of a third game at the expense of those arrived 'on time'. While the Board doesn't have a solution to this issue, it does suggest that those who arrive late should be prepared to wait to play until both of the existing games have been completed and an appropriate number of players are on hand to start a third game. (Note this really only becomes an issue once 25 players are on hand.) Also, it is possible that late arrivals may end up playing in the 'upstairs' game with 8 players to minimize the disruption of the games/series in progress.

From Irwin Grossman:

Tomorrow, on August 2nd, I’ll be riding my bicycle 84 miles, from Wellesley, MA to Bourne, MA, as a participant in the Pan Mass Challenge to help raise money for life-saving cancer research and treatment at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. I have established a fundraising goal of $4,000 and would appreciate your help in sponsoring me to help me reach this goal. You can read more about how cancer has touched my life at my profile page on the Pan Mass website or just go to www.pmc.org and search for me by name. You can also use this profile page to make a donation by clicking the “Donations” link on the menu bar above my profile and picture. Donations can be made by credit card through the web site or by a check (made out to PMC and sent to me). Employer matching gifts are encouraged and the process is explained on the web site.

Last year the PMC raised $33 Million in this 2-day event and this year the goal is $34 Million. I thank you in advance for supporting me with this great cause.

Thanks for your help.

Treasurer:    Rick Killigrew

Secretary:    Mike Powers

Board at Large:    Myles Brown, John Doerr, Mike Holownia, Lonnie Powell, Dave Rosenblatt

bullet

The Board believes the membership should have an understanding of the financial status of the organization.  Below is a projected summary of the finances for the last year:

Cash Collected July 07 to June 08: $15,590

Gym Rental Paid: $13,557
Social Expenses (BBQ, Holiday Party, etc.): $527

The organization is in good condition and controls are in place to ensure that multiple Board members, in addition to the Treasurer, regularly monitor the organization's cash flows.  A portion of the organization's reserves were spent on the clothing season pass holders received; another portion was used to lower last year's season pass rates from prior years.  We continue to hold an appropriate amount in reserve for unexpected needs.

From Dr. Ernie via the New York Times:

The Claim: Stretching Can Prevent Soreness and Injury

THE FACTS
Stretching — long promoted as a way to prevent injury, to reduce soreness and to speed post-exercise recovery — may not fulfill its promise. Over the years, scientists have found that stretching before or after a workout has little effect on either risk of injury or what is commonly known as delayed onset of muscle soreness, the discomfort that comes a day or more after challenging physical activity.

Numerous studies have reached this conclusion. One of the most recent and extensive reports was published in October in The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. The report reviewed 10 randomized studies, which over all looked at the impact of stretching before and after exercise, in repeated sessions and in intervals ranging from 40 seconds to 10 minutes. The authors concluded that stretching had little or no effect on post-exercise soreness.

Another systematic review, by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was published in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise in 2004. It looked at multiple studies and found that stretching “was not significantly associated with a reduction in total injuries,” but also concluded that more research was needed.

For now, many experts say that what may work is a quick warm-up, like low-impact aerobics or walking. It also helps to ease into an activity by starting off slow and then increasing speed, intensity or weight (for lifting).

THE BOTTOM LINE
Research suggests that stretching does not affect soreness or risk of injury during exercise.

Dreams Do Come True...

ABU DHABI -- 29 January 2008 -- The Abu Dhabi Knee & Sports Medicine Centre (ADKSMC), established by Mubadala Development Company (Mubadala) in 2006, is about to embark on a second phase in its development. The exciting expansion plans will see the specialist centre relocate to a brand new, state-of-the-art 45 bed facility in Zayed Sports City.

ADKSMC is the first healthcare facility in the Middle East to specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with knee and sports-related injuries. Knee injuries are one of the most common musculoskeletal problems experienced in the region and there has been significant demand from police, military personnel, athletes and the general public for the clinical expertise offered by its team of internationally-renowned physicians.

In 2007, ADKSMC conducted over 570 surgical procedures. Due to its significant operational success, there is a great demand for the Centre to expand into a purpose-built facility. Plans are now underway to develop a new building to accommodate Phase II of the project.

The facility forms part of Mubadala Healthcare’s integrated healthcare delivery network of general and multi-specialty hospitals, specialty centres of excellence, clinical support services and primary care/GP clinics that will be linked by state-of-the-art IT systems and technologies to provide a seamless and high-quality patient experience.

As one of several centres of excellence created by Mubadala Healthcare, ADKSMC combines international expertise with excellent facilities to offer world-class clinical care. It is uniquely positioned to provide comprehensive medical care from first consultation and diagnosis to surgery, rehabilitation and recovery.

Under the leadership of Dr Charles Brown, the Centre offers the latest advances in rehabilitation and surgical techniques including arthroscopically-assisted ACL surgery, meniscus preservation, articular cartilage repair, minimally invasive knee replacement surgery, and arthroscopic and open shoulder procedures. It is also the first facility in the Middle East to have a Tissue Bank, where fresh-frozen bone and soft tissue grafts are stored for use in knee ligament surgery.

At ADKSMC, particular emphasis is placed on pain management, and treatment is based on the concept that sports rehabilitation, fitness and cardiovascular conditioning must go hand in hand in order to return individuals to their pre-injury states.

The new facility is due to open in mid 2009 and will be located in the redeveloped Zayed Sports City Complex, adjacent to several other sports facilities and athletic fields. While ADKSMC will continue to serve its existing patients in the region, it will also be ideally positioned to provide treatment to the sporting community.

“The expansion and relocation of Abu Dhabi Knee & Sports Medicine Centre to Zayed Sports City is testament to its first year of operational success and the dedication and expertise of Dr Charles Brown and his team, who have been the driving forces behind this outstanding achievement,” said Mark Erhart, Executive Director of Mubadala Healthcare. “This facility is a perfect example of our goal to create a robust private healthcare infrastructure for the region.”

“We are very pleased to be able to treat even more patients at this new facility,” said Dr. Charles Brown, Director of ADKSMC. “This is excellent news for the future of healthcare provision in Abu Dhabi and we are looking forward to the next stage in ADKSMC’s development.”

OTH Basketball appears to be reaching new heights of popularity--we have been adding more new members more rapidly than in any time in the recent past.  As a result, we are regularly seeing 30+ players every session; unfortunately it also means we are getting to the point where we will need to limit new players/members in order to avoid multiple subs per team per game.

John D. is OTH's officially in charge of new members.  Please take a look at the partial listing of OTH's official by-laws regarding membership--as approved by the membership last spring.  It's reasonable to expect stricter enforcement of these.

Section 2.01(c). Sponsorship Required For New Members

Commencing June 1, 2007, in addition to meeting all eligibility criteria, any person desiring to become a new Member of OTH may only do so if sponsored by a current Voting Member of OTH. Sponsorship shall be satisfied by submission of a written request for admission of such person delivered to the President of OTH. Upon receipt of such request, the President shall notify such person of admission as a Member of OTH provided all eligibility criteria have been met.

Section 2.01(d). Membership Criteria

To be eligible to be a Member of OTH a person must:

(i) be at least forty (40) years of age or older (unless the Board of Directors in its sole and absolute discretion waives such requirement);

(ii) have signed and delivered a liability waiver to OTH’s Clerk, the form of which shall be established from time to time by the Board of Directors; and

(iii) have provided a valid e-mail address to OTH’s Clerk.

Section 2.01(g). Guests Policy

Members shall have the right to bring one (1) “guest” to play in OTH basketball games on no more than six (6) occasions (no more than two of which may be consecutive) during each calendar year. All “guests” must be at least 18 years of age and pay the Daily Rate to play in OTH basketball games. By bringing a “guest” to play in OTH basketball games, the Member bringing the “guest” is deemed by virtue of said Member’s membership in OTH and these By-Laws to accept responsibility for holding OTH and its Members, Officers and Directors harmless for any and all claims, demands, damages, actions or causes of action that may arise out of said “guest’s” participation in OTH basketball games. Any “guest” who has participated in OTH basketball games on two consecutive occasions in any calendar year shall not be allowed to participate in OTH basketball games thereafter until he or she becomes a Member in OTH.
